The Children's Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Trust
The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital has recently moved from Pendlebury to Oxford Road and into a dedicated children’s hospital with state of the art facilities for children and their families. The Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit
(BMTU) has moved into a new ward adjacent to the haematology and oncology units. As this move is completed
the Children’s Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Trust, which during its first 25 years has helped keep Manchester at the
forefront of children’s BMT, continues to work to support the Unit and its activities.
In the last years the Trust has helped build and equip and run:
- A dedicated 7-bed Children’s unit for the use of bone marrow transplant patients
- A dedicated stem cell laboratory including all current stem cell manipulation technologies
Manchester, as a clinical laboratory facility, has been accredited against the most exacting international standards and is
the first such stand-alone Children’s Hospital in the UK to be recognised in this way.
The Fund, therefore, is now focused on:
• Ensuring that the move to the new site does not affect the quality of service provision and that all facilities are available
for children and their families.
• Ensuring the transfer of the Stem Cell Laboratory to this same central site is smooth and all facilities are maintained
and extended
Manchester BMTU has fantastic results and continues to publish widely in the field of BMT. It now seeks to build on these results and develop newer techniques of transplant through its research and through its collaborative links within Manchester and beyond. The Trust is involved in supporting the infrastructure of some of this research and it is expected that some innovative transplant techniques for patient benefit will be led from Manchester in the coming years.
The clinical team, as well as the patients and their families, are indebted to the Trust for its invaluable support over many
years and for its continuing dedication to this vital area of medicine in the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
