Conductive Education Centre, London

Cerebral palsy affects about 1 in 400 children. It is a non progressive, incurable condition brought about by injury to the brain before, during or shortly after birth. Its causes are many but among the most common are physical injury during delivery, viral and other infections during pregnancy, very premature birth and oxygen deprivation to the brain brought on by other factors such as baby's heart stopping. It can affect any family without warning.

The effects can include:
·awkward, slow or jerky movements
·stiffness in the muscles and joints
·muscle spasms
·unwanted erratic movements
·floppiness or extreme stiffness in the body
·difficulties in co-ordination, balance, perception, and speech.

Left un-addressed, these difficulties will persist and often worsen throughout a child's life, resulting in extreme difficulties in a child’s ability to live and function independently. Their schooling, social life and relationships with others would also be affected.

Conductive Education is a system of education developed for children and adults with movement or developmental disorders. Trained staff guide and motivate children to develop greater control of their muscles and movements. By imposing some order on the jumbled messages sent from the brain, conductive education equips children to overcome problems they encounter in their everyday lives.
